Dredges and Dredgers

A dredge or dredger is essentially the same type of equipment which is called differently depending on the person and location. Dredges are commonly called dredges in the Americas, whereas the word dredgers are most commonly used worldwide. These types of machines can be used for a variety of mining applications and dredging projects. There are a few types of hydraulic dredges that are manufactured and customized to aid in specialized dredging projects such as the Auger dredge, Cutterhead dredger, Plain-Suction dredge, Hopper dredger, Chain Ladder dredge, and Ladder pump dredger. Each of these types of hydraulic dredges is unique and has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to dredging projects, because of different variables that could potentially hinder the dredging project.

For example, the location of the area where the dredging project is taking place. The dredge may not be feasible to dredge in the location because of its size. The dredger may not have the correct dredge parts equipped on the dredger to dredge the different types of materials or sediment. All of these brief factors are key components that could hinder the effectiveness and productivity of the dredger while also hindering the success of the dredging project and/or mining application, if a detailed dredge plan has not been correctly developed and implemented.

Dredgers can be used for a multitude of dredging projects including some of the following: Environmental remediation, land reclamation, marina construction, mining, beach restoration, irrigation, channel and canal maintenance, and dredging for sand and gravel, and for other types of materials such as gold and other precious metals.

Custom Dredge Works provides all of these types of dredgers, and different types of dredging equipment that can help improve the environment from natural disasters such as bad storms and hurricanes, which typically damages the environment. Using hydraulic dredges can assist in repairing the environment before and after a natural disaster strikes.

Hydraulic Dredges For Mining and Dredging Projects

Custom Dredge Works, Inc. is a professional hydraulic dredge manufacturer located in Topeka, Kansas. Custom Dredge Works, Inc supplies their clients with hydraulic dredgers, dredge parts, and dredge equipment to aid them in different types of hydraulic dredging projects. Listed below are the types of hydraulic dredges that the company designs and manufacturers for dredging projects around the world.

Types of Hydraulic Dredges
  1. Hopper Dredgers
  2. Auger Dredgers
  3. Straight Suction Dredger
  4. Cutter Head Dredger
  5. Chain Ladder Dredger
  6. Ladder Pump Dredger
Description of Dredges

Hopper Dredgers:

Hopper Dredgers are dredge ships that have hoppers located on the dredge. These hopper dredgers are fitted with dredge pumps that dredge suction from the channel, which becomes transported through the pipeline on the dredge. Once the material becomes transported, the dredged material is then stored in the hoppers on the dredger. When the hoppers are filled the dredged material becomes discharged through the pipeline on the dredger to the contamination area or the disposal site. These type of dredges are commonly used to dredge heavy materials such as sand and gravel, but can be used to dredge other types of heavy materials. Hopper dredgers are used in large spaces such as high traffic sea areas, or the ocean, but they are not commonly used in smaller confined or shallow areas.

Auger Dredger:

Auger dredgers are similar to cutter head dredgers, but the auger dredgers are smaller in size. The auger dredger has a similar cutting tool used for dredging but it is set differently on the dredge. Auger dredgers are commonly used for environmental mining or for other types of dredging projects. This type of dredge has the ability to pump materials faster than using the larger cutter head dredger. Auger dredgers are commonly used to dredge softer materials such as slurry, sludge or slit, but can be used for other types of dredged materials such as sand. Even though, the auger dredge has the ability to dredge sand it may not be as effective or efficient as using a cutter head dredger, but the auger dredge can be more productive and efficient than using a cutter head dredge since auger dredgers have the ability to create less turbidly than using a cutter head dredge.

Straight Suction Dredge:

Straight Suction Dredge is also called a Plain Suction Dredge. This type of dredge uses the suction of the dredge pump to get the material into the pipeline of the dredger. Straight Suction Dredgers are equipped with water jet spray nozzles to assist in the cutting the materials.

Cutter Head Dredge:

Cutter Head Dredger is a type of dredge that uses a rotating cutter sometimes called a crown or a basket. The cutter head part of the dredger helps move the material from one location to another area of the suction mouth. This part of the dredge allows the material to become suspended which is then traveled into the pipeline. A cutter head dredge is unique since it typically has a variety of cutter heads than can be attached on the dredge. For example, a cutter head dredge can have a serrated cutter head, a pick tooth cutter head, or a plain cutter head attached on the dredger.

Chain Ladder Dredge:

Chain Ladder Dredger is a type of dredger that uses a chain to loosen the material. The chain ladder dredge is used when material becomes suspended. After the material becomes suspend the material is then pumped while conveying over sized materials, which may hinder production away from the suction. The chain ladder dredge has the ability to effectively loosen materials making it easier for suction, while using minimal usage and power. This type of dredger has the ability to permit production in deposits that cannot be mined using a rotating cutter unlike the cutter head dredger.

Ladder Pump Dredger:

Ladderpump dredge can be used for different types of mining applications or dredging projects. The dredge pump is located on ladder of the dredge which can be used or operational underwater. With the dredge pump being located on the ladder, there is a significant advantage of reduced suction lost with the positive head on the dredge pump inlet. This advantage increases the ability of a higher percentage of solids being pumped, therefore increasing the effectiveness of the vacuum suction capabilities.  This advantage has the possibility of being cost effective, since the production has increased as a result reducing the cost for pumping.
